Scientists have isolated the gene (named Mc1r) which determined a mammoth's coat colour. The DNA used to perform this research was from a wooly mammoth bone found in Serbia, which was dated to be around 43,000 years old.
The same gene can also be found in some mammals today, and even in humans. It is reduced activity in the Mcr1 gene which causes humans to have red hair.
