There are plans to use a large daisy-shape sunshade in order to prevent too much light from the stars of the particular solar system from entering the telescope, which will be used to look for life on other planets.
There have been more than 170 planets which have been discovered so far, although this will be the first more direct method of discovering new planets. Usually planets are discovered via less direct methods, such as by observing stars and seeing whether or not they dim - which would indicate a planet or other body passing in front of it.
